Review #1 The Bowmore Legend

The Bowmore Legend Expression: An Islay Single-Malt Scotch

This scotch actually suffers from a rather rough reputation, at least in the r/scotch world of reddit. I, however, choose to buck the trend, and insist that out of all of the offerings I'll review, the Legend is actually the best way to introduce a newcomer to the tasty, peaty, smoky world of the Islays.

Color: Golden, light straw.

Nose: Smoke, and plenty of it. This is the foremost impression of this expression. Newcomers to the Islays ought to find this a tantalizing aroma, rather than being overpowered by the more medicinal nature of a Laphroig, or even an Ardbeg. There's charcoal here, and a very distant hint of brine - but much less of the seaside is present compared to an Ardbeg.

Palate: Again, the smoke is at the forefront here, but only enough to call attention to itself. It's followed by a rush of peppery sweetness that's mellower than you might expect. The fruit flavors here are primarily pears and pomegranates, with an undertone of vanilla throughout.

Finish: Mild and short-lived. The pepper presents itself as a highlight, and there's no oiliness at all. This is a clean and bright-tasting dram that should leave a newcomer reaching for the glen cairn glass for another sample very soon after their first swallow.

Overall: The Bowmore Legend expression will have a permanent place in my scotch lineup. It's a wonderful way to introduce newcomers to the complexity promised by other Islays, without overpowering them with the medicinal nature that most folks find off-putting about peat.

Another thing going for this particular single-malt is the price tag. In my area, it's a very, very affordable introduction to the Islays, ringing in at less than $30 for a full 750ml. bottle.
